The linking arms is to sing "Auld Lange Syne" a nasty English tradition that reared it's ugly head in South Africa as well. If it's not in Aus yet watch out cos my brothers staying in Darwin and it may well have followed him.

The best way to avoid the 'ALS' cliché is to either
1. Duck to the loo at 3 to 12 but then you miss out on all the kissing and hugging...which can be fun.
2. Fill both hands with overly full glasses of alcohol and when people approach to "link arms" give them a glare...nobody likes to ring in the new year by spilling someone else's drink.
